Machiko Osawa

Ms. Osawa received a Ph.D. in economics from Southern Illinois University. Previously, she was a Hewlett Fellow at the University of Chicago, and held associate professorships at the University of Michigan and Asia University. She specializes in labor economics and, recently, on how to balance life and work in Japanese society. She has also served on numerous government committees such as the special task force exploring the declining birth rate and gender equality. Ms. Osawa also lectures on the University of the Air. She has written many books including "Economic Change and Female Labor" (Nikkeihyoronsha, 1993), "Economics for the New Family" (Chuo-koronsha, 1998), "The Future of Labor-Comparison of Atypical Labor in Japan, Europe and the U.S" (Editor, Japan Institute for Labor Research, 2003), "Work-Life Balanced Society" (Iwanami Publishing House, 2006), and "Women and Work in the 21st Century" (co-authored, Japan Broadcast Publishing, 2006).
