Kenichiro Mogi

Mr. Mogi was born on October 20, 1962 in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from The University of Tokyo Faculties of Science and Law, he earned his Doctorate of Science at The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science in the Department of Physics. Prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Mogi attended RIKEN and the University of Cambridge. Mr. Mogi is also a part-time lecturer at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, The University of Tokyo, Osaka University, Waseda University, and the University of the Sacred Heart Tokyo.
Mr. Mogi is a specialist in brain science and cognitive science. His research focuses on the relationship between the brain and the mind, with particular emphasis on "qualia" (the subjective qualities of perception). He also engages in literary and art criticism. Published works include "Nou to kuoria" [Qualia and the Brain] (Nikkei Science); "Ikite shinu watashi" [The Living and Dying Self] (Tokuma Shoten); "Kokoro wo umidasu nou no shisutemu" [The Brain's System for Generating the Heart and Mind] (NHK Publishing); "Ishiki to wa nani ka: 'watashi' wo seisei suru nou" [What is Consciousness?: The Brain that Creates the "Self"] (Chikuma Shinsho); "Nounai gensho" [Phenomena in the Brain] (NHK Publishing); "Nou to kaso" [The Brain and Imagination] (Shinchosha); "Nou to sozosei" [The Brain and Creativity] (PHP); "Surume wo mite ika ga wakaru ka! " [You Can't Know a Squid by Looking at Dried Cuttlefish!] (Kadokawa Shoten, co-authored with Takeshi Yoro); "Nou no naka no chiisana kamigami" [Tiny Gods in the Brain] (Kashiwa Shobo, co-authored with Akihiro Utada); "Nou seiriho" [The Brain's Organization Method] (Chikuma Shinsho); "Kuoria korin" [The Advent of Qualia] (Bungei Shunju); "Nou no naka no jinsei" [Life Within the Brain] (Chuo Koron Shinsha); "Process AI" (Tokuma Shoten); "The Future of Learning" (co-authored) and "Understanding Representation" (co-authored). Mr. Mogi received the 4th Kobayashi Hideo Prize for "Nou to kaso" [The Brain and Imagination] (Shinchosha).
