Yuki Ota

PROFILE

Yuki Ota took up fencing in the third grade, and achieved three consecutive championship victories in national high
school championships. He performed brilliantly in many international competitions as a Japanese national player from
2004, winning a silver medal in men’s individual foil at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Japan’s first Olympic medal in
fencing, and a silver medal in the team foil event at the 2012 Athens Olympics. At the 2015 World Fencing
Championships, he took home the gold medal, becoming the first Japanese to win a world championship in any event in
fencing. After retiring as a player, he has been working to promote fencing as president of the Japan Fencing Federation
and vice-president of the International Fencing Federation.
