Toshio Katayama
President and Representative Director, Nissen Holdings Co., Ltd.
Mr. Katayama was born in 1950 in Ehime prefecture. After graduating high school, he worked at Marugo Department Store and then joined Nihon Sengei (now Nissen Holdings) in 1973, working his way up to Executive Managing Director in 1999. In 2000, he became President and Representative Director. In 2002, the company was listed in the 1st Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange and then the 1st Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange the following year.
From 2005 onward, Mr. Katayama faced radical changes in the business environment due to revised laws and boldly implemented fundamental group business structure reforms. In 2006, he shifted the logistic division to a joint venture with Toyota Industries Corp. and then led Nissen to become a pure holding company in 2007. In 2008, he withdrew from unprofitable businesses, downsized its finance business, and executed M&A of mail order-related businesses. Various governance measures that have been advanced among listed companies were implemented for restructuring of the corporate governance 2007 onwards. These restructuring include overhauling the composition of the board of directors by adding independent external board members; establishing a governance committee as well as a nominating and compensation committee with an external member serving as committee chairperson and more than half the members being external.
